Concert Band (grades 9-12)
Concert Woodwinds and Concert Brass/Percussion come together to form Concert Band—an entry-level course centered on music theory and foundational band literature. This ensemble is intended for all freshmen in the high school instrumental music program. Students learn marching fundamentals while developing the musicianship needed for upper-level bands. Completion of this course is required before advancing to Wind Symphony or Wind Ensemble.
Wind Symphony (grades 10-12)
Prerequisite: Orange or Black Band; entry determined by audition.
The main objective of Wind Symphony is to attain the highest possible level of performance possible for each student. This is accomplished through the performance of intermediate literature, and the study of theory, rhythm, technical facility, etc.
Wind Ensemble (grades 10-12)
Prerequisite: Orange, Black, or Wind Symphony; entry determined by audition.
The main goal of this group of accomplished musicians is to study and perform advanced compositions. The Wind Ensemble is the most traveled and performed band at Rockford High School. Entry is by strict audition only.
Marching Band (grades 9-12)
All students enrolled in the high school band program are required to participate in marching band. Band is a full year class. The season begins with June Camp, Pre-Camp and Band Camp in July, and regularly scheduled weekly rehearsals beginning in August and running throughout the season. Performances and activities such as home football games and competitions, take place almost every weekend through November. Attendance is mandatory for all students.
Color Guard (grades 9-12)
Color Guard auditions usually take place in the spring, with rehearsals beginning soon after and continuing through November. The Color Guard is a non-musical section of the marching band. Students that are not in one of the high school bands that are selected through audition must sign up for the first trimester of band. The Color Guard provides additional visual aspects to the performance and interprets the music that the marching band is playing via the synchronized spinning of flags, props, and through dance. They incorporate the use of different colors and styles of flags to enhance the visual effect of the marching band as a whole.
